Short Sturya # 1 – Mark Munel

In this first Short Sturya, Mark Munel talks about his passion for art and mobile photography while imparting the lessons that life has given him. This year, he recently lost two significant people in his life who stood as important pillars that molded him into who he is today.

As Mark Munel continues his journey in life, he finds comfort and inspiration in his artistic pursuits, specifically in mobile photography. Through his lens, he captures the beauty and resilience of the human spirit, often drawing subjects from his surroundings and personal experiences. His photographs serve as a testament to the power of art to heal and connect, transforming moments of grief into expressions of love and gratitude.

Despite the profound loss of his grandmother and father, Mark remains passionate in his pursuit of art, honoring their memory by embodying the values they instilled in him. Their absence has undoubtedly left a void, yet their presence continues to resonate within his heart, fueling his determination to live a life filled with purpose and meaning.

A: What makes a good shot?

M: For me, it’s all about the composition. I look for photos that are well-balanced and visually interesting. I also like photos that tell a story or evoke an emotion.

A: What makes a subject compelling to you?

M: When I’m taking photos of people, I’m drawn to those who stand out from the crowd. I like people who have unique expressions or body language or who are in a striking setting. I also like to capture moments of solitude and introspection.

A: What makes a subject compelling to you?

M: When I’m taking nature photos, I’m looking for images that are both beautiful and thought-provoking. I want photos that make me stop and appreciate the beauty of the natural world and that also makes me think about the bigger picture.

A: What does a photowalk feel like for you? What are ways to improve on mobile photography?

M: If you’re looking for a way to improve your mobile photography skills, I highly recommend going on a photo walk with friends or other fellow mobile photographers. It’s a great way to learn, be inspired and have fun.”

A: What did 2023 teach you?

M: (The year) 2023 was a very harsh and cruel year for me. I have so many sad photos this year, but I’ll treasure them as valuable memories.

Losing my loved ones was a difficult experience, but it also taught me the value of health. It made me realize that we are all just passing by. This life is short, so we should make the most of it. We should cherish the time we have with our loved ones and we should live each day to the fullest.

A: What would you tell your younger self?

M: It’s a good thing you’re a nurse (laughs).

A: Is your glass half full or half empty—and what makes you see it that way?

M: After going through so much, I think you can’t stay optimistic without going through pessimism. That is why I see the glass both empty and full. In that way, i can weigh and plan my options well.

Seeing the glass as full can help us avoid rash decisions, be prepared for setbacks, and be more open to new possibilities. It’s a good way to approach life and is worth trying to find the balance.
